Mesenteric and omental cysts

Key points


Uncertain aetiology

Possibly benign proliferation of lymphatics


True cysts lines with cuboidal or columnar cells

No smooth muscle layer

No mucus producing cells


Filled with serous or chylous fluid


Can cause volvulus

Can casue omental twist

Malignant transformation in rare cases


Procedure

Omental cysts: Excise with omentum. In females, check both ovaries present, as ovarian cyst can tort and avulse, then become embedded in omentum

Mesenteric cysts: Resection of mesentery and affected bowel as long as segment not too long

If not possible to excise - can marsupialise, drain and sclerose with ethlyl alcohol/10% dextrose
